Avery Gagliano

Having made her debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of just 20, 22-year-old pianist Avery Gagliano is an artist with ‘distinctive young talent’. Bringing sincerity, emotional depth, and exquisite voicing, alongside a thoughtful and intriguing spirit to the stage, Avery came to international acclaim as the First Prize and Best Concerto Prize winner of the 2020 National Chopin Piano Competition, and as the only American semifinalist at the 18th International Chopin Competition in 2021.

Recent and forthcoming highlights of the 2023/24 season include her debut with the Rochester Symphony and Galveston Symphony, as well as recitals at the Luxembourg Philharmonie, Ehrbar Saal (Vienna), La Grange au Lac (Évian), Paderewski Festival, Miami International Piano Festival, and Sanibel Music Festival. With a particular passion for collaborating with other artists, Avery is also a dedicated chamber musician, regularly sharing the stage with ensembles such as the Balourdet Quartet and the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players in New York.

At the invitation of Sir András Schiff, Avery appeared in recitals throughout Europe in the 2022/23 season as part of his Building Bridges series. She has also, in recent seasons, appeared on renowned concert stages and festivals including the Verbier Festival, Gilmore Festival, Bravo!Vail Festival, Ravinia Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Carnegie Hall, Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, Louis Vuitton Foundation, Salle Cortot, and WQXR Greene Space. Her solo appearances with orchestra include the Louisville Orchestra, Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, Tuscarawas Philharmonic, MostArts Festival Orchestra, Oregon Mozart Players, Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony in C.

Henryk Martenka

Henryk Martenka is the Honorary Director of the International Paderewski Piano Competition. The Director of the International Paderewski Piano Competition in years 1986, 1998, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019, 2022. Graduated from the Jagiellonian University  in 1981. He also completed postgraduate editorial studies at the University of Warsaw in 1986.

Henryk Martenka has been based in Bydgoszcz since 1982 and is a multifaceted figure in the world of journalism, working as a press, radio, and television journalist. He is also a columnist, translator, and publisher. From 1982 to 1990, he served as the head of the music department at the “Pomorze” publishing house. In 1987, he received a scholarship from the “Japan Foundation” in Japan.

He played a pivotal role in cultural initiatives in Bydgoszcz, including founding and presiding over the Opera Society in Bydgoszcz in 1985. In the same year, along with pianist Prof. Jerzy Sulikowski, he revived the Paderewski Piano Competition. Henryk Martenka was the initiator and director of the International Percussion Workshops in Bydgoszcz from 1989 to 1994 and the Summer Polonia Artistic Workshops in Bydgoszcz in 1990.

He inspired the creation of the Paderewski Society in Los Angeles in 2007 and is a member of its Advisory Board. He also initiated the Paderewski Piano Academy, a unique masterclass program for pianists featuring a symphony orchestra.
