PADEREWSKI COMPETITION

3rd All-Polish Paderewski Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz

Bydgoszcz, February 5 – 13, 1994

The third edition of the competition was preceded by a few years’ efforts made by the Society for Music in Bydgoszcz, targeted at the change of the so far organizational formula. In their result the Ministry of Culture and the Arts appointed the Society for Music a main organizer of the competition. The F. Nowowiejski Academy of Music co-organized this event.

The novelty also consisted in the fact that the organizer was entrusted with the responsibility to collect funds, including subsidies from private patrons. Statutory prizes were financed in total by the American Foundation Paderewsk’s Center in Princeton, i.e. Barbara Piasecka-Johnson, and a Yamaha piano for the best participant from Poland by the Foundation of Regina Smendzianka. Further benefactors included: Foundation Center for Ignacy Paderewski from Wrocław and Bydgoszcz Culture Found. The competition was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and the Arts, the Voivodeship Office and the City Office of Bydgoszcz.

The third competition took place under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Wałęsa.

The competition lasted from 5th to 3rd February, 1994. The auditions for the first and second stage and final A were conducted in the concert hall of the Academy of Music, however final B with an orchestra took place in the Pomeranian Philharmonic. The Statute provided for the participation of pianists from Poland and abroad studying or domiciled in Poland, not older than 27. Twenty five pianists entered the competition, but in the end 17 candidates from Poland, Japan, Ukraine, USA and Great Britain took place in auditions.
